ROCHESTER — Eight students from East High School’s Culinary Institute competed in the fifth-annual Iron Chef Competition with Shavelle Johnson coming out on top.
The East High senior won a full scholarship to Monroe Community College, according to Alecia McLaughlin, the program administrator. Elvis Reyes, a senior who came in second, won $3,000 to attend the college of his choice, and Joshua Rodríguez, also a senior, won $2,000.
"They met the competition with enthusiasm and showed off their talents," McLaughlin said.
Each of the students also received a mortar and pestle from El Pilon and a culinary instruction book and a personalized chef coat donated by Wegmans.
