The Rochester Red Wings will play as Cocos Locos de Rochester in the upcoming season as part of the Minor League Baseball’s 2020 Copa de la Diversión initiative.
Cocos Locos will make its game debut Friday, May 29, followed by two more games at Frontier Field July 8 and Aug. 23, according to a Rochester Red Wings news release. The team’s name derives from the popular Coco Loco rum-based beverage enjoyed throughout the Caribbean Islands and typically served in a coconut, the released noted.
The planned transformation will celebrate the large Hispanic community of Rochester. All Cocos Locos games will feature traditional Latin music, dancing and food.
This is the third year of the MILB initiative, and the event was designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams’ local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities.
Tickets and merchandise for the Cocos Locos games are available for purchase now. And, according to Nate Rowan, director of communications for the Red Wings, there will be an unveiling of the Coco Locos team jerseys in the spring.
