Borinquen Dance Theatre marks anniversary with community performance

Borinquen Dance Theatre marked its 38th anniversary with a community performance titled Light, Joy and Life, which took place April 27 at The Hochstein School in Rochester.

A variety of dances, such as folkloric, Caribbean and Latin jazz, were performed by Borinquen’s junior and senior groups. The show also included special tribute performances honoring Christopher Morrison, who died in January after a battle with pancreatic cancer, and Gloria Marrero, who passed away last year. Morrison was Borinquen’s modern dance instructor and choreographer, and Marrero was the older sister of Borinquen founder Nydia Padilla-Rodriguez.

A scholarship fund has since been created to honor Morrison’s legacy by providing need-based financial assistance for dance students at Hochstein. Donations to this fund can be made online at https://hochstein.org/Support or by mailing a check to The Hochstein School, 50 N. Plymouth Ave., Rochester, NY 14614. Checks should be made payable to the school.
