Pandemic forces Rochester community events to be cancelled

Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, several events that take place annually in the Rochester area have been canceled due to COVID-19 health-related concerns.

According to the City of Rochester’s website, the city will not be issuing any special-event permits through August.

The following are some of the community events that have been cancelled:

Miss Puerto Rico of Rochester Cultural Pageant (originally scheduled for June 6)

IBERO Annual Scholarship Gala (originally scheduled for June 20)

SSGT Javier Ortiz Memorial 5K Race & Walk (originally scheduled for June 20)

Public Market Latino Night (originally scheduled for July 17)

The Puerto Rican Festival (originally scheduled for Aug. 13-15)

While some organizations have made plans to reschedule or are working toward hosting alternative types of events others have made the decision to redirect their efforts.

After canceling its annual masquerade ball in April, the Rochester Latino Rotary Club decided to cancel all Rotary events for the rest of the year, secretary Jazmin Ruiz told El Mensajero Catolico. Instead, members have been volunteering with other groups in Rochester to help distribute food and masks to those in need.
