YWCA event features Empowering Women winner, ‘Sesame Street’ actress

ROCHESTER — The director of Children Services & Family Sustainability at Ibero-American Action League was honored last month with the YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County’s 2017 Empowering Women Award.

Ida Peréz received the award Sept. 27 during the YWCA’s annual luncheon. The event’s keynote speaker was Sonia Manzano, who portrayed “Maria” on Sesame Street for more than 30 years. Named among the “25 Greatest Latino Role Models Ever” by Latina Magazine, Manzano broke ground as one of the first Hispanic characters on national television, according to information from the YWCA.

Peréz also will receive the 2017 Hispanic Heritage Month Award from the Rochester City School District. The award ceremony will be held Oct. 26 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 131 W. Broad St.
