A national movement that began last winter continues its mission to engage more Catholics in prison ministry.
Dismas Ministry began its awareness campaign last December by reaching out to more than 13,000 parishes across the county, according to information at www.dismasministry.org/act.
The campaign offers several actions for parishes to take, including:
* giving prison ministry a prominent place on diocesan websites;
* ensuring that prison-ministry coordinators are appointed;
* visiting inmates in their dioceses once or twice a year; and
* including prison inmates, family members and victims in the prayers of the faithful.
Non-Catholics outnumber Catholics who visit prisoners or offer services at jails or prison ministries, according to Dismas officials. For more information, visit www.dismasministry.org.
