Organization receives $1.1 M grant

ROCHESTER — The Urban League of Rochester has received a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide academic and occupational training programs for at-risk youths.

The grant is part of the YouthBuild program, a community-based alternative education program that provides classroom instruction and occupational skills training for young people ages 16 to 24. The training leads to a high-school diploma, education development or a general-equivalency diploma, according to information from the labor department.

The occupational skills training component offers students certifications in construction or other related jobs. The youths learn construction skills by building or rehabilitating housing for low-income or homeless individuals and families in their communities.
