Office fields many calls to help immigrants

The New York state Office for New Americans responded to more than 25,000 calls from immigrants and made more than 42,000 referrals to nonprofit agencies last year.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo created the office last year as the first one dedicated to helping the state’s immigrants and their families.

The office’s hotline answers general questions about immigration and naturalization in more than 200 languages. Additionally, callers may obtain referrals to the office’s opportunity centers or other programs serving refugees and immigrants.

The hotline is available from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 1-800-566-7636.
