Monroe Community College has been awarded a federal grant to provide child care for low-income students.
The nearly $293,000 from the U.S. Department of Education will allow MCC to offer 33 subsidized slots at its on-campus Guon Child Care Center during the fall and spring semesters and three summer semester slots. The funding is provided through the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) Program, according to information from MCC officials.
The federal grant will provide funding for the child-care program through September 2019 and can be renewed for four years. Without CCAMPIS funding, MCC can provide subsidized child-care slots for only eight children.
Students eligible to receive the subsidized slots for their children must qualify for Pell grants, which are awarded based on financial need.
The nationally accredited Guon Child Care Center opened in 1991 and provides early childhood care and education for children ages 2 months to 5 years. For more information, call 585-292-2640.
