ROCHESTER — The two local Latina residents who ran for elected office lost their races.
Yversha Roman lost to opponent Anthony Micciche to represent Monroe County Legislature’s 26th District, which covers the city’s west side and parts of Gates and Greece.
James Vazzana beat out Maritza Buitrago for Monroe County Family Court Judge. She was the first Latina to run for that seat.
Roman is a Puerto Rico native and is assistant director of school-based programs at the Center for Youth. Also a Puerto Rico native, Buitrago began practicing law in 1999 at the Legal Aid Society. She later served for a year as assistant attorney general in the Rochester regional office and returned to the public defender’s office in 2009.
