The City of Rochester will receive two grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support efforts to investigate, clean up and revitalize brownfield sites.
A brownfield is a property that is difficult to develop because of the presence or potential presence of a contaminant, according to information from city officials.
A $200,000 brownfield cleanup grant will be used to complete cleanup efforts at a former gasoline service station at 121-123 Reynolds St. City staff already completed investigations and removed abandoned underground storage tanks from the site.
A second $200,000 assessment grant will provide further environmental investigations at designated Brownfield Opportunity Areas (BOA). The city has four BOAs totaling 1,800 acres where efforts are underway to improve environmental conditions to support revitalization.
