College information offered at PRYD event

ROCHESTER — A college fair hosted by the Puerto Rican Youth Development and Resource Center aimed to introduce city students not only to area colleges but also to the preparation needed to get to college, agency officials said.

About 50 attended the fair, which included workshops and representatives from seven colleges and was held at Martin Luther King Jr. School No. 9, said Angel Alicea, the event coordinator for PRYD. The agency is part of Ibero-American Action League.

The workshops were designed for middle- and high-school students and focused on such topics as financial aid, essay writing and applications, as well as career exploration.

"This college fair is an important event for the youth in our community," said Aida Veras, Ibero’s vice president of children and youth services. "Having accurate information for college preparation is key to the continuation of higher education. It makes the process much easier for the students to navigate."
