Charter school to open on Bishop Kearney campus

IRONDEQUOIT — A new elementary charter school will open in the area next August.

On Dec. 14 the state Board of Regents approved the Discovery Charter School, which will be located on the Bishop Kearney High School campus, according to information from founding committee members.

The school will offer an expeditionary learning curriculum, which is designed to enhance a rigorous core academic program. That curriculum is associated with Outward Bound and two schools in the Rochester City School District.

Admission will be open to 40 students per grade level, said Grace Tillinghast, one of the founding members. It will initially include classrooms in kindergarten through second grade and expects to add a new grade level each year, she added. Students will be chosen by a lottery process.

For more information about admission, visit the school’s website at www.RochesterDiscovery.com or call 585-342-4032.
