Several student organizations, including the Spanish and Latino Students’ Association (SALSA), cosponsored a Day of the Dead celebration Nov. 1 at the University of Rochester. Students who attended could sample sweet bread, or pan de muerto, make decorative flowers, write letters to loved ones and decorate candy skulls. Members of the Student Organization for Caribbean Awareness closed the event by performing a traditional dance. The Day of the Dead is the Hispanic celebration of All Saints Day Nov. 1 and All Souls Day Nov. 2, and the observance aims to honor the dead and show that death is not to be feared.
