Diocese of Rochester asks parishioners to urge DREAM Act passage

During the Diocese of Rochester’s Public Policy Weekend Feb. 10 and 11, parishioners will be asked to sign petitions urging congressional leaders to pass the federal DREAM Act to protect young immigrants.

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act would protect from deportation about 1.8 million immigrants who arrived illegally in the United States as children and provide them with a path to citizenship.

The advocacy is part of the Diocesan Public Policy Committee’s two-year effort “Share the Journey: Love Your Neighbor,” which supports Pope Francis’ call for faith communities to deepen their understanding and compassion for migrants and refugees. The diocese will emphasize faith formation, education and action throughout 2018.

The committee also is asking parishioners to prayerfully consider two urgent education priorities for 2018: the opioid crisis and the expansion of abortion in New York state.
