St. John the Baptist is the patron saint of Puerto Rico. When Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493, he named it San Juan Bautista and named the port city Puerto Rico, according to topuertorico.org. The names were later switched, and San Juan became the capitol of Puerto Rico.
