Rochester City School District’s graduation rate reaches new high

The graduation rate for the Rochester City School District has reached its highest level since 2005.

According to data from the New York state education department, the four-year graduation rate for June 2017 graduates was 51.9 percent, representing an increase of 4.5 percentage points. The rate for August 2017 graduates also rose, from 53 percent to 56.8 percent.

The percentage of Hispanic students who graduated increased 2 percentage points from 49.7 percent to 51.6 percent, as did African-American students, from 54.9 percent to 58.6 percent, according to the state data (http://bit.ly/2BMvhBR).

The numbers show positive steps in the right direction for the district but are still not high enough, stated Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams in a district press release. Through the ongoing Path Forward process, the district is working with the community to improve on areas that affect graduation rates and school quality, including enrollment, attendance outreach, curriculum for special needs’ and high-performing students.
