Rochester City School District students in grades 3-8 scored well below the state average for reading and math proficiency, according to results from the New York State Education Department.
The number of students proficient in English language arts rose 0.9 percentage points to 7.6 percent and 0.7 percentage points to 7.9 percent in math, according to the NYSED report at http://bit.ly/2wFWOl2. A score of level 3 is considered proficient. Statewide scores rose 1.9 percentage points to 39.8 percent for reading and 1.1 percentage points to 40.2 percent for math.
The percentage of Rochester students who obtained a nearly proficient score of level 2 rose one percentage point to 25 percent in reading and dropped one percentage point in math to 20 percent, according to NYSED.
As part of its goal to improve student achievement, the district is increasing its literacy efforts at all grade levels, according a statement from Rochester Superintendent Barbara Deane-Williams. The district has hired 31 additional reading support and intervention teachers in schools across the district for the upcoming school year. Additionally, schedules will include additional literacy and math instruction time.
