The Rochester City Council has approved a referendum to gauge whether residents would support a state takeover of the Rochester City School District.
The city council voted 5-3 with one abstention June 18 to amend the city charter to allow the nonbinding referendum to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot.
The intent of the referendum, which was requested by Mayor Lovely Warren, is to ask residents whether they would support the state’s removal of the RCSD board of education for a period of no less than five years in order to allow the state commissioner of education to implement procedures to provide a better education for students.
