Local school receives recognition

ROCHESTER — Rochester International Academy was one of 20 schools named 2016 "Schools of Opportunity" by the National Education Policy Center.

The center, based at the University of Colorado at Boulder, sponsors the annual recognition project, which identifies and recognizes public high schools that are closing gaps in resources that in turn create student achievement gaps, according to information from the center.

Selection criteria included: providing additional learning time during the school year and summer, reassessing student discipline policies, using a variety of testing tools as a means of improving teaching and curriculum, and using technology to supplement classroom instruction.

The Rochester school received a gold designation. Applicants went through four levels of screening, including in-person evaluations. For more information, visit http://opportunitygap.org.
