Ministry for migrants, rural workers presenting Lyons open house

Established in 1981, the Rural & Migrant Ministry works with community leaders to advocate for equality for farm workers within agricultural systems.

The statewide, non-profit agency operates within the Diocese of Rochester at the Liturgia Rural Worker Education Center in Lyons. In partnership with farmworkers throughout western New York, RMM established the center in 2010 to conduct various youth and worker programs such as the Rural Workers Education Center in Wayne County and Youth Empowerment Programs.

According to RMM’s website, the center was named Liturgia because it means, “Honoring the public work of the people.”

Although RMM’s offices and and rural worker education centers remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the agency has announced a celebration at the Liturgia center on Aug. 14 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

According to WNY regional coordinator, Shawn Tallant, the event is an opportunity for members of the community “to reconnect with one another after such challenging times.”

For the time being the organization will continue to host its other programs through online meetings online and by the phone.
