Latino Rotary Club events to get families walking and reading

The Latino Rotary Club of Rochester is hosting two events in May that will get participants reading and exercising.

On May 18, the club will conduct its third-annual walk-a-thon, which this year will take place at Seneca Park in Rochester. The event aims to promote healthy lifestyles for families, and proceeds will support the club’s community and literacy projects.

Check-in for the walk-a-thon is at 9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 9:30 a.m. Visit to make a donation, which will automatically register the donor for the event.

At 10 a.m. on May 31 (rain date June 7), the club will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Conkey Corner Park for the StoryWalk at El Camino Trail.

According to information on StoryWalk from Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vt., the program was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier in 2007 as a way to promote literacy, physical activity and family time in nature. It was developed in conjunction with Kellogg-Hubbard Library and the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition.

StoryWalk takes an illustrated children’s book and disassembles it, displaying each page sequentially along a walking route in the community or a trail, according to information from the Latino Rotary Club, with books being rotated every two to four months.

The club sought community partners to create StoryWalk at El Camino Trail to encourage families in the community to spend time together enjoying walking and reading to promote healthy habits and good literacy habits. The club’s StoryWalk partners are the City of Rochester, Ibero Development Corp. and Genesee Land Trust, and the sponsors are Healthi Kids: A Common Ground Initiative, the Latino Giving Circle, M&T Bank, Key Bank, Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, Wegmans and Burgos Income Tax.
