ROCHESTER — Belen Colón, who worked for more than three decades in the Rochester City School District, received the "Abuelita of the Year" award during a Hispanic Heritage event last month.
Colón was honored for her service to the community, education and the church, said Roberto Burgos, the city’s senior community housing planner, who serves on the city’s Hispanic Heritage Month planning committee. More than 125 people attended the event held at Los Flamboyanes on Sept. 20, Burgos said. The award aims to honor Hispanic senior citizens for maintaining their culture, traditions and language, he added.
In addition to a city proclamation, Colón also was presented with a framed copy of a song composed in her honor by Pedro Nuñez and his band.
