Community leaders recognized for their contributions

Three Rochester community leaders were recently recognized for their contributions.

During its 28th-annual Salute to Excellence ceremony Nov. 16, Monroe Community College inducted Barbara Deane-Williams, Rochester City School District superintendent, and Gladys Pedraza-Burgos, chief operating officer for Ibero-American Action League, into its Alumni Hall of Fame, according to information from MCC officials. The inductees were honored for professional achievement, support of MCC and giving back to their respective communities. The event was hosted by the Monroe Community College Foundation.

Deane-Williams earned an associate of applied science degree in liberal arts and sciences from MCC and holds a bachelor’s degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, a master of education degree from the University of New Hampshire and a certificate of advanced study from SUNY Brockport. She has completed doctoral work in teaching and leadership at Syracuse University.

Pedraza-Burgos was the first person in her family to earn a college degree. She earned an associate in applied science degree in liberal arts from MCC, followed by a bachelor’s degree in communication studies from SUNY Brockport, and a master’s degree in counseling and human development from the University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education.

Hilda Rosario-Escher, Ibero’s CEO, also was among the 20 honorees of the Rochester Business Journal’s inaugural ICON Awards. The awards recognize business leaders older than age 60 who have had notable success and demonstrate strong leadership both within and outside of their chosen field, according to information at rbj.net. The awards will be presented on Dec. 18.
