Rochester DMV office to reopen

The state Department of Motor Vehicles will reopen a full-time office in downtown Rochester after a 15-year absence.

Mayor Lovely A. Warren and Monroe County Clerk Adam J. Bello announced the agreement Aug. 7 to open the DMV office using a $425,000 state grant for construction secured by Assembly Majority Leader Joseph D. Morelle.

The office will be located alongside the city’s Parking Violations Bureau and the Rochester Traffic Violations Agency at 200 E. Main St. Under the agreement, the city will expand the amount of space it leases in the building and sublet a portion to the County Clerk’s Office.

The lease agreement must be approved by Rochester City Council, which is scheduled to consider the legislation on Aug. 21.

After the state closed its downtown DMV office in 2003, city residents had access to a mobile DMV office in several locations with limited hours and services. In 2017, Bello located a mobile unit in the CityPlace building, 50 W. Main St., that was open daily from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The new Rochester DMV office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be fully accessible.
