Educational partnership plan goes to state level

ROCHESTER -- The Rochester City School District Board of Education has voted in favor of submitting to the state education department a plan for SUNY Geneseo to serve as the educational partnership organization for Dr. Charles T. Lunsford School No. 19.

Although the move was approved unanimously during a special meeting on May 11, school board member Liz Hallmark said she did have mixed feelings.

The plan "breaks off a piece of the district … (but) on the other hand, I welcome partnerships with the broader community and I appreciate the expertise Geneseo brings into this (collaboration)," she said.

Under the proposal, Geneseo would function as the school’s superintendent and implement a teacher-led community school model to improve educational outcomes for students, according to information at geneseo.edu. Jane Morse, professor of education, was assigned last fall to work with the school’s teachers, and Geneseo’s School of Education also will be placing teacher candidates at the school.

According to a July 2016 letter to school families, the partnership would also benefit School No. 19 by having access to SUNY Geneseo students who can serve as tutors and in other supportive roles. Additionally, School 19 students would receive more personalized academic instruction and be able to participate in more extracurricular activities, including arts, drama, science, sports and community development.
