Redevelopment plan moves forward

ROCHESTER -- Four projects have been selected to redevelop a portion of the former Inner Loop highway that ran through downtown Rochester.

According to information from city officials, Mayor Lovely Warren is recommending the following proposals be approved by the Rochester City Council:

* A housing development from Home Leasing with 45 affordable apartments and four townhouses. All 49 units will be available to tenants who earn between 50 percent and 90 percent of the area median income.

* The sale and development of 117 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments, about 26,000 square feet of retail and office space, and underground parking for residents and businesses by Morgan Development and Christa Construction. Christa officials said they also would move their office operations to the city if this project is approved.

* A museum expansion proposed by Strong Museum of Play, Indus Hospitality Group and Konar Properties that would include construction of a parking structure for 1,200 cars, a hotel with at least 120 suites and an indoor water feature, and construction of a mix of housing and urban retail spaces.

* A temporary urban green space to be maintained until the other projects are developed.

A $16.5 million federal transportation grant moved the redevelopment forward in creating jobs and renewing the neighborhoods along the former Inner Loop section, according to local U.S. Senate representatives.
