ROCHESTER -- As an engineer, Miriam Ojeda said that she was thrilled to bring her 8-year-old daughter to the ¡Soy Única! ¡Soy Latina! rally, which this year focused on science, math and technology.

ROCHESTER -- The seven East High School students who competed in this year's "Iron Chef" competition did not race around or show the typical signs of anxiety commonly on display on reality TV cooking shows.

ROCHESTER -- Diocesan officials are not just thinking about spirituality when it comes to meeting the needs of Latino youths who they know face challenges that are unique from their suburban or rural counterparts.

ROCHESTER -- For the group of teens from St. Francis Xavier Cabrini Parish and Holy Apostles Church, the March for Life provided an eye-opening experience, said a parish official.

ROCHESTER -- DaJon Humphrey is a college graduate who moved back to his native western New York to find a career making a difference in the community.

ROCHESTER -- With beads of sweat rolling down their faces, Thomas Hilire and Adam Johnson swung shovels of dirt over and over -- all for a good cause.

The two high-school students took the lead on digging a 5-foot hole last month in the center of a vacant lot on Clifford Avenue as part of a Puerto Rican Youth Development and Resource Center project to create a memorial garden. The garden will honor city youths who have lost their lives, 15-year-old Thomas explained. And in the area that Thomas and Adam helped dig up on Aug. 16, students later placed totem poles -- with the words "Remember Rochester Youth" painted on them -- that they created to represent those who have died.

ROCHESTER -- Mother Nature rained on the parade for the Rochester Hispanic Youth Baseball League -- literally, but not figuratively.
